BLOOMINGTON and INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Siân Mooney, dean of the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, has been appointed to the National Science Foundation’s Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering.
The CEOSE plays a critical role in advising the NSF on broadening participation, particularly in ensuring the full inclusion of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities in science, engineering, and related fields.
“I’m deeply honored to join the CEOSE,” Mooney said. “This appointment reflects my commitment to bringing all voices to the nation’s science and engineering, and I look forward to collaborating with my fellow committee members to advance opportunities that ensure everyone can contribute to and benefit from scientific innovation.”
The CEOSE includes nearly 20 members from diverse STEM disciplines drawn from institutions in higher education, industry, government, and nonprofit sectors. Mooney will serve a three-year term on the committee, which provides biennial reports to Congress. The committee was established through the “Science and Engineering Equal Opportunities Act” in 1980 to address the problems of growth and diversity in America’s STEM workforce.
Committee members also collaborate with other federal agencies—such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health, the Smithsonian Institution, and the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities—to share insights and foster ongoing efforts to broaden participation of underrepresented groups in the nation’s STEM workforce.
