R.J. Woodring, associate dean for student success and administration at the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and colleagues from the University of Wisconsin and University of Kansas, are co-authors of a chapter in the new book Administration, Leadership, Finance, and Budgeting in Higher Education and Student Affairs: Integrating Theory, Research, and Practice SAPPI Series #11.
The chapter, “Budgeting and Budget Models in Student Affairs,” is a budgeting primer for new higher education professionals, explaining key terms and elements of higher education budgeting and finance in accessible, practical terms.
“My previous research is on higher education finance and budgeting, so I have a background in this work,” Woodring said. “The chapter is an introduction to these concepts written for graduate students and new professionals in higher education and student affairs. My hope is that it demystifies the budgeting process, preparing readers with the necessary skills to confidently engage with budgets, particularly at a time when higher education resources are constrained.”
Woodring co-authored the chapter with Lori Reesor, the vice chancellor of student affairs at UW and a former vice provost for student affairs and dean of students at IU, and Jason Hornberger, vice provost for finance at Kansas.
“All of us have KU affiliations in our history,” Woodring said. “Lori invited me to join the project during her time at IU. I was thrilled to work with them on this effort.”
