Message from the Director
May 29, 2020
Dear O’Neill community,
As your Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, I want you all to know that my heart and thoughts are with you all during these tough times. The egregious acts of discrimination and profiling as a result of bias, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, antisemitism, and other forms of supremacy nationally and locally have led to the recent deaths and widespread suffering throughout our country and our O’Neill community. All of which has and is taking place during a pandemic. Feelings of uncertainty, fear, frustration, anger, numbness, and or hopelessness have not gone unnoticed. I see you and your pain. If you are reading this, please know that you belong here and you still matter.
As a school, our motto is leading for the greater good, and during times like these, it is even more important for us to do just that. The words we use matter and our actions are equally important. As we move forward, be conscious of those around you and proceed with care and empathy. If you are unaware of why people are upset or afraid, please take the time to research the issues. Check-in on those in your department, office, virtual classroom, and households and let them know we are still here for one another.
During times like these, it is immensely important to keep in mind the humanity and overall wellbeing of others. Let us lead with care, teach with compassion, and manage with empathy. Hoosiers help Hoosiers and Bloomingtonians help Bloomingtonians. We are IN this together, we will get through this together, and we are stronger together.
If you need support, please contact IU’s Counseling and Psychological Services. Services are also available by appointment through the Center for Human Growth. I am here for you all and if I can be a resource or a listening ear, just reach out.
